Obviously, he's someone Dharma would be interested in (or would have been interested in), assuming that his funding wasn't coming from Dharma in the first place. But there's got to be something more to him. He's a physicist and apparently a chemist, and a computer hacker. But, in The Constant, a crew member said something like Daniel "can't help himself". What does that mean? Is he sick somehow? Or is here better because he remembers (now) that Desmond is his constant. It makes me think that the card game with Charlotte wasn't some sort of psychic exercise; it was just a focusing exercise to keep himself in the present or on one reality because he had to remember how to override the computer.
